Where We Work

Oakland, California is home to the busiest port in Northern California – it’s a seat of trade for the entire region. But while the port thrives and startups boom in Oakland itself, the children of this city see vast disparities in educational outcomes. For instance, nearly half of graduates from Oakland Unified School District are not eligible for state college when they graduate from high school. And while 72 percent of white students are proficient in reading and writing by eleventh grade, just 17 percent of Latino students and 14 percent of African-American students are proficient. Gaps like these hinder students’ success in school and limit their options later in life.

College Track Oakland opened in 2002 to help address this injustice. Today, our site in Jack London Square serves nearly 500 high school and college students. We’re proud to announce that 84 percent of students from the Oakland class of 2015 matriculated to a four-year college. The students of College Track Oakland are thriving and growing into leaders for their communities, this nation, and the world.
