At AASCU, she has advocated for public higher education at the national level, working to influence federal policy and regulations on behalf of member colleges and universities; serving as a resource to presidents and chancellors as they address state policy and emerging campus issues; developing collaborative partnerships and initiatives that advance public higher education; directing a strategic agenda that focuses on public college and university leadership for the 21st century; and providing professional development opportunities for presidents, chancellors, and their spouses.\r\n\r\nPrior to her tenure at AASCU, Dr. Garc\u00eda served as president of California State University, Fullerton, and Cal State Dominguez Hills. She was the first Latina to lead a Cal State University in the history of the system. A recipient of myriad honors and awards\u2014from Hispanic Business Magazine\u2019s 100 Most Influential Hispanics in 2007 to Diverse Issues in Higher Education\u2019s Top 25 Women in Higher Education in 2013\u2014Dr. Garc\u00eda was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the President\u2019s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.\r\n\r\nA first-generation college student, Dr. Garc\u00eda earned a Doctor of Education and an M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University; an M.A. in Business Education\/Higher Education from New York University; a B.S. in Business Education from Baruch College, City University of New York; and an A.A.S. from New York City Community College.\r\n\r\n\u201cI have long admired Dr. Garc\u00eda\u2019s tireless and trailblazing efforts on behalf of educational equity. Her expertise and perspectives will be invaluable in our ongoing work to catalyze a national movement to democratize potential and affirm scholars and communities that are a critical part of this nation\u2019s forward progress,\u201d said Dr. Shirley M.
